Family camp at Merricks

Family camp at Merricks

Our Living in Australia Family Camp was held on 16 and 17 January 2014, in the scenic Mornington Peninsula location of Merrick’s Lodge Campsite.  Our staff were joined by more than 50 people from diverse Arabic speaking backgrounds who recently settled in Australia.

Participants had the opportunity to strengthen their connection with family members, form new friendships and share experiences of life in a new country.

Camp participants represented the diversity of Arabic Welfare’s client group, with countries of origin being those of Iraq, Lebanon and Syria and of both Christian and Islamic faiths. It was wonderful to see all participants enjoying each other’s company and their first experience of Australian nature, including their first encounter with the huntsman spider!

The involvement of Victoria Police was a highlight of the camp. Members of the Victorian Police joined us and engaged participants in interactive activities to increase their understanding of the role of the police. We saw participants wearing police uniforms, role-playing scenarios and young camp participants thought their interaction with the police was “cool”.

Arabic Welfare would like to thank all camp participants, Victoria Police (Senior Constable Albert Fatileh and New & Emerging Community Liaison Officer, Ansam Sadik) and Kangan TAFE for allowing us to use their facilities.
